I created this painting and its companion piece, Modern Art Fifteen, using a palette knife after first painting a background of parchment (off white). My inspiration was the sense of light and of growth--reaching upward toward the sun. By applying sweeping blocks of color with the knife and then scraping them off, I gradually built up this sense of openness.
